FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The fact that you're visiting this site and showing an interest in how hypnotherapy can help you is an enormous step in you taking control of your life. If you're new to the process, you'll undoubtedly have many questions, so here are some things you might like to know...

WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Clinical Hypnotherapy is a fast and effective method of therapy which involves the use of hypnosis enabling you to access the power of your subconscious mind and dissolve the blocked emotions and negative limiting beliefs and behaviours that lie behind your physical, mental and emotional problems.

No hypnotherapist has the power to ‘put you into a zombie-like trance’ or make you do anything that you wouldn’t do in your normal waking state. All hypnosis is basically self-hypnosis, as it’s essential that you allow yourself to enter this state of total relaxation while being guided into it by your hypnotherapist.

Whilst in a state of hypnosis, your subconscious mind is open to receiving and accepting positive suggestions and visualisations that will create new empowering beliefs and behaviours, helping you to make the changes you want and to reach your desired goals.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

The state of hypnosis is similar to the dreamy, relaxed state you enter just before sleep and is known as the alpha state. Similarly, during your hypnotherapy, you will usually be fully aware of your surroundings at the same time as being deeply relaxed and open to suggestion.

Hypnosis is nothing unusual and most people go in and out of it several times throughout their day. For instance, have you ever driven somewhere and not remembered the journey? Have you been so deeply engrossed in a book or film that you’ve been unaware of your surroundings? Have you ever been deep in thought, staring into space and then someone has spoken your name and you’ve been alerted back to reality? That is a state of hypnosis!

WHAT IS INVOLVED AT THE INITIAL CONSULTATION?

The Initial Consultation is included in the first session and will last up to two hours. Any subsequent sessions typically take up to one hour.

This first session is dedicated to gaining an in-depth knowledge of you as a person so that I, as your hypnotherapist can develop the therapy specifically for you with a correct understanding of the precise nature of the issue and how it affects your life. I will then fully explain the procedure and we will agree a realistic expectation of a result. Although this is your process, hypnotherapy is very much a partnership between Therapist and Client so your input and full co-operation are essential to ensure a successful outcome. Once satisfied that hypnotherapy will be of benefit to you and that we should proceed, if there is time, I will relax you into a light hypnotic state so that you can experience the process and the therapy may begin.

HOW LONG IS A COURSE OF THERAPY?

An assessment of the likely length of therapy is generally ascertained during the Initial Consultation but a typical course of therapy can be anything up to four sessions. The exception to this is the Quit Smoking Therapy, which is a single session lasting up to three hours. We will always discuss the probable length of treatment at the outset and agree on a period for review. Should on-going treatment be required this can be undertaken subsequently. I may give you some 'homework' in the form of some relaxation exercises or recordings to listen to that can greatly augment the treatment programme.

WHEN WILL I SEE AN IMPROVEMENT?

Usually, following the Initial Consultation, three sessions are enough to instigate a discernible improvement in most treatable conditions. This will vary greatly from client to client of course, but I would ask you to commit to these three sessions after which we will review progress and agree on how we proceed. As a responsible hypnotherapist I am always aware of the cost and will be mindful of managing your expectations. We will repeatedly 'take stock' and discuss progress together.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE-EFFECTS?

Some people new to hypnosis think that they will experience an adverse reaction, but this is far from reality. Side-effects to hypnotherapy are extremely rare.

DOES IT INTERACT WITH ALCOHOL OR MEDICATION?

Hypnotherapy is generally unaffected by alcohol or medications although careful consideration will be given if the client is on prescribed medications for depression or anxiety. The exception would be if a client was attempting to undergo therapy whilst actually under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In such cases I will always refuse to treat anyone in this condition.

CAN ANYONE HAVE HYPNOTHERAPY?

Usually, although it’s not advisable where the client is suffering from a diagnosed clinical mental illness. It is also not recommended for those suffering from severely impaired hearing for purely practical reasons.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERAPY HAS FINISHED?

When an agreed course of therapy has been completed, we will review the treatment and see if any further 'top-up' sessions might be indicated. I might also provide you with a programme to follow at home to assist you in your continual progress to well-being.

IS THE THERAPY CONFIDENTIAL?

Absolutely. No information about you or your treatment is shared with anyone without your explicit consent. However, if at any time I deem, in my best interest that you any client is at risk of harming themselves or others, I reserve the right to contact outside agencies, usually the emergency services. I am required by law to disclose certain information. For example, legally I must inform the relevant authorities if the client discloses an act of terrorism or any other circumstance that may put themselves or others in danger..

All notes are stored securely and treated with the utmost respect and confidence and fully compliant with current GDPR conditions.

I am aware that hypnotherapy can be a sensitive subject with many of my clients so, should we meet outside of the therapy sessions, nothing will be discussed regarding your treatment.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

That depends on a lot of factors and is fully explained on the FEES page.
